We welcome the Scottish Government’s announcement that an additional £20m will be allocated to its national fuel poverty scheme, Warmer Homes Scotland, as part of a package of measures to support older people through the winter.

Warmworks has been the Managing Agent for the Warmer Homes Scotland scheme since 2015. A new phase of the scheme was launched just over a year ago, in October 2023, and we have seen record levels of demand in that period, with almost 18,000 new referrals received from Home Energy Scotland in the last twelve months. This additional funding means we can now deal with more of that demand and help more homes and families far sooner than they might have expected.

It has been great to see referrals from every local authority area in Scotland. We’ve installed energy efficiency improvements from Shetland to the Scottish Borders, ensuring the scheme continues to deliver a truly national approach.

Our team is currently working hard to support thousands of households through the customer journey, and the scheme has been delivered fully compliant with PAS 2035 standards.

In the first 12 months, the scheme has achieved some incredible outcomes, including:

  • over 5,500 households with a fully completed application
  • 97% of installations pass inspection first time
  • 99% customer satisfaction rate
  • £359 average household fuel bill saving

Driving down household energy bills to help tackle fuel poverty is a key aim of the Warmer Homes Scotland Scheme, but it’s important to recognise the wider health and well-being impacts reported by our customers. Having a working and more efficient heating system or a better-insulated home can help alleviate the impact of physical health conditions. Customers often tell us that the scheme has helped to improve mental well-being by reducing stress and anxiety levels, too.

The new funding represents an important vote of confidence in our customer-focused, values-driven delivery. It will also help to protect jobs and apprenticeships in our supply chain of registered, local installers and will provide a vital lifeline to thousands of homes and families across Scotland over the winter period.
